Bee Pride’s summer intern program (now called Hands On Program) will be in its sixth year in 2019. The class includes 1 hour of seasonal instruction followed by activities in the apiary for hands on experience. Participants will experience all the seasonal apiary tasks and have opportunities to better understand hive management strategies.
This program is an excellent opportunity to gain confidence and skills in beekeeping to take home to your hives. Topics covered in the curriculum include completing a dead hive autopsy, proactively controlling varroa mites, completing an artificial swarm, making splits and divides, assessing a hive, reading frames and completing a sugar roll, troubleshooting queen issues, extracting, reviewing fall mite treatments with instruction and demonstration, helping with fall hive assessments, making candy boards, and wrapping hives for winter. Each class will include time to discuss issues in your own apiary.
Bring whatever protective gear you are comfortable wearing in the apiary. Veils are mandatory, and appropriate foot wear is required.
