Bee School

WMBA Bee School 2014: This year’s school will begin on Wednesday, January 22.

The school will be held at the Region 9 Adult Learning Center at 377 River Rd on Route 2 in Mexico.  The first night we will have registration at 6:00 p.m.  On subsequent class nights 6:00 – 6:30 pm will be time for class set-up and discussion or questions and class presentations will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  The school costs $40.00 (includes books).  Current members are welcome (encouraged!) to attend once 2014 dues are paid.

This is an abbreviated version of our school topics for this year:

1/22 – Overview of course, beekeeping costs, apiary location/good neighbor relations
1/29 – Bee biology, races of bees, acquiring bees
2/5   – Beekeeping Equipment hands-on workshop
2/12  – The queen and re-queening, managing for gentle bees, pheromones
No class on February 19 – School vacation week
2/26 – Spring management/swarming, bee pasture/water sources
3/5   – Late summer management, preparing for winter
3/12  – Bee pests and diseases
3/19 – Honey harvest – extracting, comb honey, using wax, home processing rules
3/26  - Beekeeping tips/tool box/Q & A
4/2   – Installing Nucs and packages, feeding new hives
4/9 - Bears and other pests/Bear fences, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Open hives
4/16 – Advanced class or snow day makup
No class on april 23 – School vacation week
4/30 – Advanced class TBD
May TBD – Open Hive
June TBD – Open Hive

Classes are held in the cafeteria at the Region 9 school.

Annual Dues for WMBA membership are are: $15 individual and $22.50 family.
