We are a group of local beekeepers learning together about the honeybee and how to maintain healthy hives. Through our activities we hope to educate the community about the importance of honeybees and native pollinators.
The Somerset Beekeepers is a brand new chapter of the Maine State Beekeepers’ Association, founded in January 2011. As a group we strive to learn together about the honeybee and how to maintain healthy hives. It is our hope to encourage others to take up the hobby by providing educational resources, as well as guidance from experienced beekeepers.
But in Somerset we don’t stop with the beekeeper. Gardening for Pollinators is a program developed by Master Gardener, Samantha Burns, who is also our group President, designed to educate the public about the importance of pollinators, the risks they face as a keystone organism, and how the average citizen can help–even if they’re not interested in actually keeping their own hive of bees. Our beekeepers are working to increase awareness of the situation our planet faces as pollinators around the world struggle to coexist with man-kind.
