Greetings to all you seasoned beekeepers and newbies. It has been a marginal season here in Aroostook County, with all the rain early in the year and drought in July/August.
I have been hearing good reports however from several of you on how pleased your bees did this summer. Time is running short for treating your hives if you’re planning on wintering your bees. I am planning on attempting this again this year. I have started treating for Mites and Nosema.
I want to welcome Wayne and Rachel Law from Portage Lake ME, beekeepers that have recently relocated to Maine from another state. I also want to welcome Shae Armstrong and his family from Fort Fairfield; I have had some discussion with Shea this past summer and wish him the best of luck on his adventures in beekeeping.
I wanted to provide you some information I received from a MSBA brochure.
Beekeeping goes way back, the earliest evidence of keeping bees in artificial hives was about 4500 years ago with the Egyptians.
Honey Oatmeal Muffins:
2/3 cup milk
1/3 cup Veg. Oil
1/4 cup honey
1.5 cups oatmeal
1 cup flour
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts – your choice
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 TBL baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
Add wet ingredients to dry and mix until just combined. Put batter in muffin pans (greased or lined)
Bake @ 400 degrees for 15 – 18 minutes
In order for 550 bees to make 1 pound of honey, they need to visit over 2.5 million flowers, pollinating as they collect nectar for honey. About a third of our food comes from insects/pollinated plants. Honey bees do about 80% of that pollination.
Aroostook County Beekeepers Assoc. is newly formed this past summer. We are very excited to get our chapter up and running with a helpful agenda to promote bee keeping in the county. We look forward to having the association grow and become better beekeepers with shared knowledge that we can all benefit from.
We will be posting a meeting soon, hope you will be able to attend. More on that to follow.
Please contact us via e mail (email@example.com) with your contact information so we can send invitations to your emails.
